No. 1 vs. No 2: We talkin about high school football

St. Thomas Aquinas and Byrnes (S.C.), ranked Nos. 1 and 2 in the nation, respectively, will play at 8p.m. TONIGHT, October 2nd, at Lockhart Stadium in Fort Lauderdale.

Before the Raiders and Rebels square off, Deerfield Beach will play St. Cloud (Osceola County) at 4 p.m. There are a little more than 20,000 seats available; one ticket is good for both games.

PS. Father Deuppen? I’m pretty sure he was a substitute teacher at STA.

AquinasFootball ain’t no joke… just ask Upper Arlington of Ohio after today’s 52-7 BEATDOWN that the Raiders layed upon dem Golden Bears. Incase you missed that ass-whooping and would like to check out some great young talent coming out of the “speed shine state” (to quote the Skywalker), here it is on ESPN360. I watched most of this game at a local sports bar here in Fort Lauderdale (Bokampers) while it appeared the entire high school had taken over the place. Coach Smith’s Raiders completely manhandled these “slow midwest kids” (to quote the Skywalker again) and almost put together a shut out but midway through the 4th quarter UA was finally able to capitalize putting some points on the board. St. Thomas Aquinas, the two-time defending Class 5A state champion and 2008 prep national champ, will try to extend its 24-game winning streak on national television (Miami Herald). Here’s what ESPN’s Fab 50 had to say about STA preseason:

“With Lamarcus Joyner and Brandon Linder, the Raiders have two of the top college recruits at their positions in the nation. Replacing graduated QB Ryan Becker is the biggest challenge, but the running game should be great with Linder and mates creating lanes for Giovanni Bernard, who had 1,528 yards and 18 touchdowns last year, and James White, who also scored 18 touchdowns and added nearly 1,000 rushing yards.”

Congratulations to the The Fastest Woman in the World!

Sanya Richards is quickly elevating herself on the list of famous St. Thomas Aquinas alum (Brian Piccolo, Chris Evert, Michael Irvin), especially from recent years–c/o 2002, what what! Other notables include Bill Crudup, Tavares Gooden, Tyler Greene, Sean Gallagher, and Johnny Cage. Sanya is doing it GINORMOUS on the world stage right now–not just the city… THE WORLD, CRAIG!
